Greetings of the day
This article is all about the WEARABLE ULTRASOUND DEVICE, written and published by Ms. Jemima, Biomedical Trainee, ATHEENAPANDIAN Private Limited.
Let's discuss the article
Title - LATEST INNOVATIONS OF ARTIFICIAL ORGAN FOR DIAGNOSTICS PURPOSE (WEARABLE ULTRASOUND DEVICE)
INTRODUCTION OF ULTRASOUND
Creates an image of the body’s organs, tissue, and other structure by using sound waves. It does not produce any radiation like X-Rays. Often these types of imaging equipment are what we call sonograms. Ultrasound produces sound waves through a transistor or probe to get a clear image of the internal organs.
USES OF ULTRASOUND
1 Mainly it is used to study Fetal growth (Unborn baby) and measure Fetal size
2 Ultrasound is used to detect breast cancer at an early stage
3 An Ultrasound is a quick and easy test to diagnose the cause of your abdominal pain
WEARABLE ULTRASOUND DEVICE
Instead of using the probe here, we use the chip to get a clear image of internal organs. A Team of Biomedical engineers designed a stamp-sized device that adheres to the skin and can deliver continuous ultrasound imaging of internal organs for 48 hours. In the current design, the sticker is attached to a device that converts the reflected sound waves into image.
However, if the team can direct the devices to a wireless target, which the team is currently working on, the ultrasound stickers could be turned into wearable imaging products that patients can take home from the hospital.
The entire ultrasound sticker has the area of the postage stamp, 2 square cm across and 3 mm thick.
The bottom is made from two thin layers of ELASTOMER that bond to a middle layer of solid hydrogel.
This ELASTOMER LAYER prevents dehydration of the hydrogel because when the hydrogel is highly hydrated, acoustic waves can penetrate effectively to give a high-resolution image of internal organs and is designed to adhere to the skin, while the top layer adheres to a rigid array of designed and fabricated.
This combination of long, tightly aligned layers of adhesive conforms the device to the skin while producing clear, precise images.
The researcher ran the ultrasound stickers through a battery of tests with healthy volunteers who wore the stickers on different parts of their bodies.
This sticker allows you to get a clear picture of the underlying structure for up to 48 hours.
They point out that research work to make their design completely wireless would involve continuous imaging of patients' internal organs for immediate use even in their current form.
